Mr Monkey carried on walking and looking at the lights. He found a section made up entirely, and unsettlingly, of farm animals sliced in half and then fixed on either side of the street with a criss-cross frame between them. Then he walked past a series of sprials and hoops of light bulbs, which slowly revolved as he looked at them. As he did, he wondered what it would have been like in 1897 when the very first Illuminations featured a grand total of eight arc lights.
