When he was not quite at the top, Mr Monkey found a tunnel through the hill. This was used by gun crews to get from the barracks to the batteries on the east of the island. The arch at the eastern end has a little plaque claiming that 576 Cornwall Works Company, Royal Engineers, built the tunnel but it didn't tell Mr Monkey why the two entrances were built so differently.
