Mr Monkey arrived in the centre of Stratford exactly where he wanted to, at the corner of Church Street and Chapel Lane. He admired the tower of the chapel of the Guild of the Holy Cross, the brown woodwork of the King Edward VI grammar school, and the black woodwork of the Guild almshouses. When Shakespeare was a whining schoolboy, it was this school he went creeping unwillingly to, in a snail-like manner. He quite possibly had a shining morning face while he did so.
You can read about the history of the Guild and the school at the Guild School Association website, and about the school today at the King Edward VI School website.
