By the 18th century, it seems that people had stopped living in dark rooms, having discovered that it's possible to paint wood panelling. By the time of the late Georgian room, they didn't even panel the whole room, and used wallpaper, fabric or paint to colour the upper part of the walls. Mr Monkey wasn't totally sure he liked the colour scheme, though.
