Mr Monkey in London

"It is pretty grand, I suppose"

Mr Monkey in Waterloo Place Mr Monkey looking at the Crimea memorial in Waterloo Place

A little down Pall Mall, Mr Monkey found Waterloo Place. The statue on the column is of Frederick Augustus, Duke of York, whose battlefield talents inspired the nursery rhyme 'The Grand Old Duke of York'. Less famously, he had strange ideas like actually training officers, and started turning the British army into a professional organisation. The shorter but wider monument commemerates Guardsmen who died in the Crimean war.
