"I think I prefer the steam engines"

Around the back of the standpipe tower, Mr Monkey found the diesel pumping house. There are a number of diesel, gas and electric pumping engines on display here, but Mr Monkey was most interested in the Allen Diesel which is one of the original four diesel engines that were used when the steam engines were retired in the 1940s. The diesels, three-cylinder vertical 4 stroke engines with external flywheels, were used until 1986. Mr Monkey wasn't totally impressed by the smell of the diesel fuel.
