Mr Monkey in Portsmouth, 30th August

"He doesn't look a bit like a king of England"

Mr Monkey looking at the statue of William III Mr Monkey looking around the Porter's Lodge Garden

Mr Monkey noticed that the dockyards were closing again. Before he left he scampered through the Porter's Lodge Garden. The Dockyard Porter used to live in the Lodge just inside the main gates and was responsible for security, preventing excessive theft from the Dockyards, and selling beer to the workers. A Millennium Garden has been created on the site of the old garden, and includes a 300 year old statue of King William III dressed as a Roman emperor covered in gold.
