Most of the ground floor was built to store military supplies, but when the Germans occupied the fort in the Great War they installed a beer hall. Mr Monkey found that an artist called Peiper, stationed in the fort, had decorated the chimney breast with a painting called the Barbarian, showing the German army as a figure in medieval armour surrounded by the decapitated heads of her enemies. Then he went into the kitchen next door, where Allied soldiers after the war left much more restrained graffiti.
