Mr Monkey got off the Metro near his hotel, but had to wait in the square in front of the hotel while a lot of Belgian riot police persons stood in lines. After a while Mr Monkey noticed that they'd left a side street unguarded, and trotted down it to work his way round to the hotel. By the time he got there the police had got bored herding Bruges football fans towards Heysel stadium* and he was able to watch their vans (and the water cannon) driving away.
* The match was the Belgian FA cup final between Bruges and Liege; Bruges won, and they did have an actual riot afterwards.
