Mr Monkey walks the Peak Forest Canal from Romiley to Marple, 19th April

"It's quite simple really, I think"

Mr Monkey looking at the upper lock gate Mr Monkey looking at the upper lock gate

At the other end of the lock Mr Monkey found that there was only one gate, so there was no need for a bridge to get to the other side. He hadn't got the right sort of handle to turn the axle that would turn the cogs to open the sluices that would let water into the lock to equalise the water levels so that he could open the gate, so he didn't try. And he hadn't got a boat to take through the lock anyway.

There are animations showing how a canal lock works at the Up The Cut website and at the Burgundy Canal website
