Mr Monkey didn't inspect lock No. 1 too closely because some workmen were putting railings around it. Instead he scampered on to lock No. 2, which was built to the same design. On the footbridge arrangement at the front of the lock he examined the lower lock gate, the mechanism for opening and closing the sluices in the gate, and peered over the parapet to look at the water outside the doors.
