Mr Monkey in Ghent, September 15th

"It's a nice big square, isn't it?"

Crossing the Vrijdagmarkt Mr Monkey had a quick look at Jacob van Artevelde, a Flemish hero who led Ghent during the Hundred Years War, first in an attempt to keep Flanders neutral, then in support of England. He was killed in a riot in 1345. Mr Monkey admired the Toreken with its corner tower; this was the tanner's guildhall until Emperor Charles V abolished the political rights of the guilds.
