Mr Monkey got off the tram at the Esplanade stop. He ran down the Leopold I Esplanade, and found a large monument to Leopold I at the end. In 1831, Leopold was invited to become the first ever king of the Belgians, who had just declared independence from the Dutch. He landed on the beach at De Panne to become king, and they put up a statue to prove it.
