Mr Monkey walks more of York's walls, August 11th

"Barbicans used to be really useful, I'm sure"

Mr Monkey came to Walmgate Bar, the only one of York's gates that still has a barbican as an extra defence to channel enemy attacks into a killing zone. Mr Monkey couldn't go into the barbican because it's a very short bicycle lane and he didn't have his bicycle with him. The barbican is only there because it was repaired after being heavily damaged during the Civil War. This meant that it wasn't falling down when the council demolished the barbicans on the other gates on the grounds that they weren't safe.
