Mr Monkey scurried up the steps next to Bootham Bar, remembering as he did that all the gates in York are called bars and most of the things called gates are streets. From the top of the wall he peered up High Petergate for a glimpse of the Minster, and looked back towards a row of houses on Bootham that had been built onto the wall that surrounded St Mary's Abbey.
