Mr Monkey in London, April 5th

"It doesn't look like a nest of thieves any more"

Walking back to his hotel, Mr Monkey walked through Seven Dials. He admired the column with seven clocks which marks where seven streets meet. This is a replacement for the original column which was demolished in 1773 in the belief that someone had hidden a lot of money under it. In the nineteenth century, Seven Dials was notorious for the number of criminals that lived there, but this was solved by knocking a lot of it down to create Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue.
