Mr Monkey scurried down a narrow alley called Saffron Hill. This area used to be a thieves rookery - Fagin lived here in Dickens' Oliver Twist (though he was imaginary, of course) - until it was cleared out as part of the development that included building the Holborn Viaduct. Round the corner, he went into Ely Place. This used to be in Cambridgeshire, as it was owned by the Bishop of Ely.
