Mr Monkey scampered along a wooden walkway across the canal basin, installed in 2002 to provide a direct route under 111 Piccadilly. Ahead of him he saw daylight, the gates of Lock 84, and the iron bridge carrying Dale Street over the canal. He paused to check that the bolts were still holding the bridge together, thought that the lock-gates looked rather odd, then looked back at the walkway before setting off up the slope.
