Mr Monkey walks the Rochdale Canal through Manchester

Trip date : 4th May, 2011
"It looks very ingenious to me"

Leaving the tunnel, Mr Monkey came to Lock 91. Because the western gates are so close to the tunnel wall the balance beams (the bit you push to open or close the gate) have to be shorter than normal, so a cunning arrangement of chains is needed to work the gates comfortably. At the other end of the lock the balance beams are the standard length, as there's nothing for them to hit. Mr Monkey glared up at the pedestrian bridge between Deansgate station and the Metrolink stop, which is his least favourite way of crossing the Rochdale Canal.
