Around the corner Mr Monkey stopped and gawped at the exterior of the neo-Gothic building, built between 1890 and 1899 by Enriqueta Rylands, widow of John Rylands (Manchester's first cotton millionaire), at a cost of £230,000. Mr Monkey tore himself away from the gargoyles and trotted along to the new entrance in the new extension.
