Mr Monkey examined some unusual fans. Some fans, like the Chinese ceremonial fan from the reign of Qian Long (1736-1795), couldn't be folded up at all. Others could be telescoped to fit into a smaller purse, and others had compartments holding small repair kits or tiny bottles of smelling salts.
