Mr Monkey was led to the end of the safe part of the 1950s workings, where a firm sign and a sturdy grill stopped anyone going any further. As there was nowhere else to go he turned round and scampered down the steps that someone had helpfully put in to replace the steep slope between the two levels. Then he went out of the mine, let his humans play at panning for minerals outside, then set off into Matlock Bath.
