Mr Monkey in Portsmouth, 29th August

"They've got lots of things here"

Mr Monkey scurried into the Mary Rose Museum to see a small selection of the 19,000 artifacts excavated from the wreck of the Mary Rose. Mr Monkey studied a wide range of things from tiny medical instruments to pewter plates to heavy cannon. Mr Monkey was interested to see that as casting cannon in bronze was such a skilled job the barrels were marked with the names of the makers and with heraldic designs. He liked the crest on the demi-cannon cast by Francesco Arcanus the elder of Italy in 1535 because it made a change from the Tudor roses on all the other cannon.
