Mr Monkey at Southsea Castle, 28th August

"It's a little dark, and rather damp"

At the beginning of the 19th century Southsea Castle, which was starting to fall down, was restored and improved in case Napoleon decided to invade via Portsmouth. The improvements included adding a counterscarp gallery in the outer wall of the moat. To get to the gallery Mr Monkey scurried along duckboards in the caponier, a tunnel across the moat. Then he climbed some stairs to peer out of the loopholes.
