Mr Monkey in Portsmouth, 28th August

"It's a grim looking place"

Mr Monkey trying to spot Spitbank Fort Mr Monkey watching a ferry in the Solent

Mr Monkey went on to the Southsea promenade and looked out into the Solent. He saw lots of ships moving, and Spitbank Fort standing very still. This is one of four forts - Horse Sands, No Mans Land, Spitbank and St Helen's - built in the second half of the 19th century to defend Portsmouth Harbour against a French invasion. Because Lord Palmerston was prime minister when the were built and the French didn't actually invade, they were known as Palmerston's Follies. You can stay in the building on top of the fort now.

You can read about the fort at the Spitbank Fort website.
