After wandering around Hammersmith following some slightly misguided signposts Mr Monkey found Hammersmith Bridge. He was rather pleased because he needed to be on the other side of the river. Mr Monkey paused for a moment to admire the bridge which was built by Sir Joseph Bazalgette between 1883 and 1887 on top of the piers and abutments of the first suspension bridge ever built in London (1824-1827). The earlier bridge apparently needed replacing because of the number of people who crowded onto it on Boat Race days. Mr Monkey scampered along the pathway under the bridge to admire it from the other side.
