"That model cathedral took 24,000 man hours, you know"

Still in Spain Mr Monkey was astounded by the size of the Escorial, Philip II's modest monastery commemorating the defeat of the French at the battle of St Quentin in 1557. According to the guidebook, there are 2,600 windows in the Escorial. Mr Monkey took their word for it, and went to admire the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Also known as St James of Compostela this cathedral was a major destination for pilgrims from all over Europe.
