Mr Monkey in Seattle, 30th January

"It's all very rusty, you know"

Mr Monkey wandered around Gasworks Park, marvelling at the rusting machinery that used gasification and liquefaction processes to turn coal into gas and oil to fuel Seattle. The plant operated from 1906 until natural gas became available in the 1950s. The City bought the site in 1962 and opened the park in 1975. Mr Monkey was careful not to get too close to the earth, which is rather polluted.

You can read about the park at the Seattle Parks and Recreation website and a bit about coal gasification and liquefaction at Wikipedia.
